Cybersecurity Levy: Tinubu Govt Only Interested in Milking Nigerians Who Are Already Suffering Severe Economic Distress โ€“ Peter Obi

Cybersecurity Levy: Tinubu Govt Only Interested in Milking Nigerians Who Are Already Suffering Severe Economic Distress – Peter Obi

In a post on his X handle on Wednesday, Obi questioned when the office of the National Security Adviser, NSA, has become a revenue collecting centre.

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Mr Peter Obi, has criticized the newly introduced cybersecurity levy.
He said: “The introduction of yet another tax, in the form of Cybersecurity Levy, on Nigerians who are already suffering severe economic distress is further proof that the government is more interested in milking a dying economy instead of nurturing it to recovery and growth.

“This does not only amount to multiple taxation on banking transactions, which are already subject to various other taxes including stamp duties but negates the Government’s avowed commitment to reduce the number of taxes and streamline the tax system.

“The imposition of a Cybersecurity Levy on bank transactions is particularly sad given that the tax is on the trading capital of businesses and not on their profit hence will further erode whatever is left of their remaining capital, after the impact of the Naira devaluation and high inflation rate.

“It is inconceivable to expect the suffering citizens of Nigeria to separately fund all activities of the government. Policies such as this not only impoverish the citizens but make the country’s economic environment less competitive.

“At a time when the government should be reducing taxes to curb inflation, the government is instead introducing new taxes. And when did the office of the NSA become a revenue collecting centre?

“And why should that purely national security office receive returns on a specific tax as stated in the new cybersecurity law?”

Microsoft To Shut Down West Africa Operation In Nigeria

Microsoft To Shut Down West Africa Operation In Nigeria

Affected employees are slated to receive salary payments up until June and will continue to be covered by health insurance.
Microsoft

According to reports, Microsoft is considering shutting its African Development Centre in Lagos State.

This move, if confirmed, would mean that at least 200 staff would be out of a job.

It would also have profound implications for the country’s technological landscape, potentially impacting job opportunities and innovation in the sector.

According to industry insiders who spoke to The Guardian newspaper on Tuesday, May 7, Microsoft informed staff on Monday, May 6, of the closure plans.

Affected employees are slated to receive salary payments up until June and will continue to be covered by health insurance.

Sources suggest Nigeria’s challenging economic conditions likely played a role.

The closure appears to affect only the ADC’s West Africa operations in Nigeria, not its East Africa facility in Nairobi, Kenya.

Microsoft launched its $100 million African Development Centers initiative in 2019, establishing facilities in both Lagos and Nairobi.

The Nigeria centre employed over 120 engineers upon launch in 2022, growing to more than 200 total staff members.

Dangote University Explains How 300-Level Female Student Died In Her Off-Campus Apartment

Dangote University Explains How 300-Level Female Student Died In Her Off-Campus Apartment

Olabisi, a 300-level student of Food and Science Technology, was found dead after she returned to her room from school.

Yahaya Aisha Olabisi

The administration of Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology (ADUSTECH) in Wudil, Kano State, clarified that Yahaya Aisha Olabisi, a female student, was discovered dead in her off-campus residence, contrary to social media reports claiming it was within the university's student hostel.

Olabisi, a 300-level student of Food and Science Technology, was found dead after she returned to her room from school.

The deceased student was said to have written her first examination in the ongoing first-semester examination at the university on the fateful day.

One of the male students who spoke to punch on condition of anonymity on Saturday, May 4, 2024, blamed her sudden passing away on examination pressure.

“The deceased was hale and hearty when she went out to write her first examination in the ongoing first semester examination,”
 the student said.

The university’s Dean of Students’ Affairs, Prof. Abdulkadir Dambazau, a statement in Kano on Friday, May 3, urged the public to disregard the reported death of Yahaya Aisha Olabisi in the hall of residence.

“It has come to our attention of a recent statement made by some media outlets regarding the discovery of a student’s corpse at the students’ hall of residence. This is entirely false,"
the statement read.

“We wish to address this matter promptly and unequivocally refute these claims. On April 23, 2024, we received news about the untimely passing of Yahaya Aishat Olabisi, a diligent and bright student of ADUSTECH, Wudil,”

Mr Dambazau explained that Olabisi spent her last evening engrossed in her studies, diligently preparing for upcoming examinations.

He said the following morning, after a shared breakfast with her roommate and a conversation with her father, the student expressed her intent to rest briefly before resuming her studies.

The dean said that, however, destiny had a different plan for her, as in the early afternoon of the same day, concerns arose when Olabisi did not respond to attempts to reach her.

He said that upon investigation, it was discovered that she had passed on in her sleep, in her off-campus residence.

According to him, immediate measures were taken, as she was swiftly taken to the university clinic, where her passing was confirmed by medical professionals.

“Given the circumstances, her remains were transferred to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), for postmortem analysis to ascertain the cause of her sudden demise,"
 he said.

Mr Dambazau said that after honouring her memory and bidding her farewell, Olabisis was laid to rest on April 24.

"We urge everyone to refrain from spreading or engaging with misinformation that may harm our university’s reputation and create unnecessary panic,” he said.

Nollywood Filmmakers Cast Actors Based On Social Media Followers โ€“ Actor, Uzor Arukwe Claims

Nollywood Filmmakers Cast Actors Based On Social Media Followers – Actor, Uzor Arukwe Claims

The ‘A Tribe Called Judah’ star admitted that it was a “big” challenge for him during his days as a struggling thespian.
Uzor Arukwe

Uzor Arukwe, the popular Nollywood actor, has made a new claim.

He claimed that there was a time when social media following was one of the prerequisites for thespians to get movie roles from some producers in the Nigerian movie industry.

He said filmmakers cast actors based on social media followers rather than talent.

The ‘A Tribe Called Judah’ star admitted that it was a “big” challenge for him during his days as a struggling thespian.

“I remember all so clearly when I started. It was a big problem for me,” the 40-year-old actor told Pulse in a recent interview.

“There was a time in this industry when it was mostly about Instagram and Twitter followers, and stuff like that. I didn’t understand it but knew it was something I had to be at peace with, because a production house wants to hire you and they’re looking at your numbers. ‘But can he act?’ That is the question I always ask. But there are some people who are blessed who are fantastic actors who have numbers and they’ve been doing well.”

Edo: Police Re-Arrest Prisoner Who Escaped From Jail During #EndSARS Protest

Edo: Police Re-Arrest Prisoner Who Escaped From Jail During #EndSARS Protest

Adegboye said the inmate was sentenced to 21 years imprisonment by the Edo High Court for raping his own daughter, Gift Alonge.
Jacob Alonge

The Edo State Police have recaptured Jacob Alonge, a 58-year-old fugitive who had escaped from the Benin Correctional Centre during the 2020 #EndSARS protests in the state.

Daily Post reports that the Commissioner of Police, CP Funsho Adegboye, disclosed this to newsmen in Benin City.

Adegboye said the inmate was sentenced to 21 years imprisonment by the Edo High Court for raping his own daughter, Gift Alonge.

According to him, “While the case is ongoing in court, he threatened that the case would have no end and true to his threat, his daughter and others who were coming to testify in court died mysteriously but he was convicted.

“After escaping from the prison during the 2020 #EndSARS protest, he was not re-arrested, but nemesis has caught up with him and he has been re-arrested and would be taken to where he belong.”

Adegboye, who described the convict as a dangerous human being, added that he is not fit to live with human beings.

He said the convict, who was serving a jail term, escaped during the #EndSARS jail break in the two custodial centres in Benin.

According to him, the police got credible intelligence that the convict, a serial rapist, was sighted at Ososo community in Akoko-Edo local government of the state.

The CP disclosed that the operatives of the Command stormed the community to arrest the inmate but some unscrupulous elements in community resisted his arrest.

He said the operatives overpowered those that resisted the arrest of the convict, following which he was re-arrested and brought to the Command.

The commissioner, however, appealed to members of the community not shield criminals because they may be their victims tomorrow, noting that criminal don’t have permanent friends.

In an interview with newsmen, the convict said he escaped because everyone was escaping after the prison was forced open during the #EndSARS protest.

“I escaped to my village. I was called that police are in my house and are looking for me, so I went to meet them and I was arrested,” he stated.
